Linux Counter #296742

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

I studied computer science at the University of Helsinki, Department of Computer Science, the birthplace of Linux operating system. I use Linux, Windows (and occasionally UNIX) operating systems and software interchangeably, depending on the type of work at hand.

I have studied usability in both the departments of Psychology and Computer Science at the Helsinki University and done usability research on user interfaces.

I work at Reaktor Innovations, a software consulting company specializing in demanding IT-projects as a Senior Analyst. Not writing code just now, although I got the Reaktor entry stack in my face when going in (Java6, CI(Hudson), TDD with JUnit, some JDave basics...). I miss it, but will now perhaps just make my own version of ELIZA.

I have built and still maintain several web-sites. I am quite fluent in HTML. I program in Java. I currently play around with Obfuna and Python as well as constantly pursue developing as a developer.

My first computing job was in the eighties as a computer support person for a branch of Helsinki City.
I have since used MS-DOS, Win 3.11, Win 95, 98, 98SE, NT, Win2000 and WinXP.
I think most of them have sucked very bad for various inherent reasons but WinXP has been ok so far for my purposes. Only 2 blue screens. Update 2005: 4 blue screens..and even with Office 2003! (Seems that certified Microsoft software is not compatible with a modern Microsoft OS. Wow!)

I have been using various Linux operating system versions for quite some years now. I now use OpenSuSE 11.0 with KDE 4.2 for fooling around with Linux and love any environment with a decent shell to offer. All of my own computers have a double boot with both Linux and Win OS:s.

I feel that the existence of Linux is of utmost importance:

  • Companies that have monopolies in an area tend to start behaving badly. Microsfot truly seems to behave badly when given the chance to.
  • Competition will produce better software for consumers. (See material above).
  • Open source is currently one of the few chances for third world countries to try to bridge the technology gap. An example.

I seem to like computing -related information very much.

time to write my own.
